Installing Windows Vista on NX7010 - blank screen

I'm receiving quite a few question about installing Windows Vista on HP NX7010 notebook, mainly because of the Radeon 9200 video driver issue, causing the notebook's screen go blank towards the end of installation - by default, Microsoft's Radeon 9000 driver is installed and it obviously doesn't work well with the video card. With the recent, 5536 Vista build, this happens after the last installation reboot, just before you're asked about regional and other settings. I'm going to describe the steps which helped me finish the installation by reinstalling the original Radeon 9200 (for Windows XP) driver.

Things you'll need in the process:
1. Vista installation CD (with the serial number),
2. The latest original (Windows XP) ATI 9200 Radeon driver (downloadable from HP's site),
3. Extra monitor, ready to plug it in your VGA expansion port on the back panel of your notebook (I'm using a KVM switch to control more computers with the same Keyboard/Monitor/Mouse, so my main desktop monitor is always available for these kind of issues).

The steps:
1. Plug in your extra monitor in the VGA port.
2. Start the Vista Setup and follow the installation steps. After a second (I think) reboot, the screen will stay blank (but not completely, as when the computer is turned off - you'll see some illumination on the edges).
3. Switch the screen to your extra monitor (by pressing Fn+F4 keys - until you see the screen appear on your extra monitor).
4. Complete the installation. If notebook reboots again, repeat step 3.
5. When your system is set up, download the video driver (if you already have it stored on a CD or other media - even better).
6. Unpack your video driver, but don't run the installation (on my system, the installation is copied to c:\swsetup\SP30204\ folder.
7. Go to Control Panel | Appearance and Personalization | Personalization | Display Settings.
8. Press Advanced Settings button and Properties button under Adapter Type - the properties dialog appears.
9. Select Driver tab and press Update Driver...
10. Select Browse my computer for driver software and browse for the folder, where video driver's files are located.
11. Press Next and follow the steps to finish the driver installation. The system will ask you to reboot. Do that.
12. After the reboot, the notebook screen should again be operational and set to the highest, 1680x1050 resolution.

This is the procedure I'm taking when installing Windows Vista on my NX7010. I've done this 3-4 times with different vista builds, installing it from scratch or upgrading from a previous version. Described steps might vary from case to case, but the idea of installing the original Windows XP driver should work.

Some notes: obviously, Radeon 9200 (along with mentioned XP driver) is currently not supported by Vista, so you can count on some unpredicted system failures - my system sometimes crashes when put in hibernation or never wakes up after put to sleep. However, this happens rarely with 5536 build. Also, forget about Aero glass effect and Flip 3D, and your Windows Experience Index will always be set to 1.

Right now, I wouldn't recommend installing Vista on NX7010, if the notebook is your primary/main working computer. Of course, it is still an unfinished product, and upgrading to the final RTM version probably won't work. But, if you can't wait to see the Vista, it's certainly worth a look.

I hope this post will help you get your NX7010 working with Windows Vista. Feel free to leave a comment about your installation experience here.

On a side note: Vista RC1 [b5600] was just released on Friday [with .NET FX 3.0 RC I'd guess]

# re: Installing Windows Vista on NX7010 - blank screen

I have tried the steps you described but I can't update the driver. The problem is that vista thinks that the driver already installed is better. Have tried to uninstall the orginaldriver and install the driver done for xp but Vista installs its own driver at startup. Can I disable the auto driver-Installation at startup ?

Hi Andrej. I solved my screen problems the same way, with the help of an external screen. But here's another challenge popping up. Every time I try to play a DVD on the "Media player v.11 " the picture is skipping. The sound is fine, but the picture is not smooth and stable. I wonder if it has something to do with the Radeon 9200 graphic card. Or if there is something I can do about it. "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N ATA Device" is my CD/DVD player.

Bashir,

I had this issue with the latest, RC2 build. This is what worked for me: go to Personalization, Display Settings, Advanced Settings, Properties [Adapter properties], Driver tab, Update driver. Browse my computer and instead of entering the driver location and clicking Next, choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer". From the list, select Mobility Radeon 9200 (it should already be installed on the machine) and, press Next and finish the installation.

The RTM version didn't come with a driver for this notebook series (nx7000/zt3000/x1000), so on initial bootup it does 1024x768 with a standard VGA driver--you can see the screen. However, when you initially install, do not select the option to automatically download AND INSTALL updates as Vista will then download a new driver for your card that will make your notebook's screen unreadable and garbled on reboot. Instead, download the Omega drivers v5.6. They're newer than the drivers on HP's site and likely to be the last drivers ever for this notebook (thanks ATI, I'm a 100% nVidia fan now). Also make sure to disable the installation of the "updated" driver through windows update! Finally, since this series of HP/Compaq notebooks is prone to video card failure, you really should keep the video card underclocked. The ATI control panel from v5.6 doesn't work with Vista so you can't underclock there, so I downloaded that ATITool and set my card's GPU and RAM to 100mhz. Now it's nice and cool and will have a long life (unlike my first card).

I have just installed the RTM version of Vista on an nx7010 and this issue still is not resolved! The solution mentioned here seems to be working however, but it is still early days.

# re: Installing Windows Vista on NX7010 - blank screen

Its not that hard, i have a HP Compaq NX7000, i just downloaded the latest drivers from HP. Uninstalled the vista default standard driver from the device manager. Restarted the pc, started the Compaq Ati Video Drivers setup, at first it will not installed, than a pop up will come, run setup using compitable mode, click allow, PROBLEM Solved. Now i wish i could for Aero Glass on my Laptop. Anyone got any bright ideas on how to get that running on a 9200.

# re: Installing Windows Vista on NX7010 - blank screen

Many thanks for the solution Andrej. Rather than the blank screen we had flashing/unreadable display after Windows Vista Business retail insisted on updating the Radeon driver to a Mobility 9000. Had to uninstall (and delete the driver files), and then follow your solution. Cheers

Hi, Daredevil, have you installed Radeon drivers for NX7010? Also, see the above comment about installing the Omega drivers, they should give you all supported video resolutions.
